A Girl's Nursery: Outer Space & Girl Power

I’m so excited, I could blast off into orbit! (Punn completely intended.) As you know, I love to feature makers on Etsy in my room designs. I’ve been following @mochamommydesigns on Instagram for quite a while now, and I just love the sweet and airy feel to her designs. Jesse, the designer behind MochaMommyDesigns on Etsy, is a busy mom who started a home business out of her need to create. I completely relate! As much as we may love motherhood, some of us just need another outlet to express ourselves. I’m featuring one of her best-seller collections in this nursery design.

What gender do you think of when someone mentions an outer space theme for a nursery? My guess is: Boy. I’m not proud of it, but that’s where my thoughts went too. So, let’s shake it up and let girls have just as much fun and adventure with an outer space theme nursery. I love the soft raspberry suits of this astronaut, and the soft hazy blue of stardust is just dreamy. I can definitely take this color palette out of this world. I love the perfectly, imperfect style of her drawings. It has an appeal for all ages, and would work for a nursery and grow with the child.

I’ve been wanting to use a two-tone crib for a while now, and this just felt like the right project for it. It will blend nicely with the ethereal blue walls. My next find was the bedding. The image is small, but if you look closely you’ll see the magenta fabric is covered in star constellations. I like these constellation sheets and changing pad cover because it nods to stars, without adding another typical shape. Speaking of stars, I had to add a little bling with this stellar changing table. Even the little balls on the rail remind me of the solar system, don’t you agree? For some balance to the bold pops of color, I chose soft, white drapery for the windows.

And…..Blast Off!! I wanted this nursery to be fun and energizing, but with softer colors. The wall treatment really elevates this design. I love using horizontal stripes to guide your eye around a room. You will notice that all 3 prints are from @mochamommydesigns collection, but I framed them differently and separated them into different vignettes: 2 above the crib, and 1 with the nursing chair. In this case, the wide horizontal stripe unifies this art collection, and makes this a real feature wall!

As always, I like to have a fun pillow for my littlest of clients. This cute moon pillow was inspired by the artwork, as well as the other circle elements in the room (the mobile, the changing table detail, the knot pillow, and even the floor lamp). And even though the chair pillow is not a circle, it came from the same moon inspiration: “I love you to the moon and back.”

I mentioned the magenta sheets, but don’t forget about the blush pink furnishings. This swivel-recliner will be the perfect spot to take monthly pics of their baby girl. And the waffle-weave blanket just looks so soft and snuggly- I couldn’t resist.

I had so much fun designing this nursery inspired by the talented MochaMommyDesigns . I hope you’ll take a few minutes and check out her Etsy Shop, and see all she has to offer.
