$100 Room Challenge, Wk 2: My Kitchen- Sanding & Inspiration

Week 2 has just flown by…. The biggest challenge of this challenge is finding the time to get work done when you have a 2 bedroom condo without a garage. My hubby usually sets up a sanding station outside, but with the cold and rainy weather here in Oregon, it’s not always a practical solution. I’m a SAHM, but I find it almost impossible to sneak away to get sanding done. So, what does all this come down to? ( Besides my little “woe is me” moment? ) Well, the only time we get any prep work done is on the weekend when I can distract the kids, and my hubby can set up shop on a cold but non-rainy morning. Eeesh- but we’re making it happen!

I think our motto for this challenge will be “slow & steady.” At least until the end is here and we’re pulling all nighters- Lol.

You’re probably wondering what got done this week. While I took the kids out on Sunday morning for 4 hours, my hubby sanded outside in the less than 40 degree weather until his hand was numb from the cold and constant vibration of the electric sander. Poor guy! He made some good progress in that short time, including a run out for more sand paper. My hubby started sanding the uppers on the stove wall, and several flat-front drawers all before nap time.

I can see the transformation beginning already, even without paint. Just sanding the cabinets down makes such a huge difference. Here’s a little comparison of our progress from Week 1 to Week 2.

During nap time I was able to draw an elevation, not to scale, of the refrigerator wall. Then I can start trying out my different color combinations for the 2-tone cabinet design. Here’s a peek:

Okay, let’s look at something PRETTY. I love creating boards on Pinterest for my personal projects. You can find all of my home ideas on my board Portland Condo . If you take a look, you’ll see I’m quite focused on white uppers, white backsplash, white counters, and a color on the base cabinets. Below I’m going to show you my top 3 inspiration images and explain my color ideas:

Option 1: White on top and mocha on the bottom. Our master bedroom is a light mocha color, and it just feels so airy to me. In addition, I would paint the partition wall in the kitchen and hallway grey.

Option 2: White on top and grey on the bottom. My boys’ bathroom and laundry room are painted light grey. In addition, I would paint the partition wall and hallway mocha.

Option 3: White on top and skinny jeans blue on the bottom. This is the color we recently painted the vanity in my boys’ bathroom. In this option, I could paint the partition wall and hallway mocha or grey.

BTW- my great room is a millennial pink and I have a light grey sofa. The hallway is integral to every room in my home, so I want to make sure it’s the right color. It’s currently a light khaki green, and I am leaning towards keeping a cool tone in the hallway since the great room is a warm tone. Just something to mull over when you’re lying in bed tonight (At least that’s what I do!). I’ll leave you with that, and dive more into the design with renderings next week!

I’ll be posting behind-the-scenes on my InstaStories, so be sure to follow me and tag along! @decoranddiapers . And remember to follow along with the other participants. Let’s get ready for some clever design transformations!!
